To celebrate the launch of the International Year of Biodiversity on 11 January 2010, the European Environment Agency (EEA) commenced a series of concise, thematic assessments of biodiversity. The second of these 10 messages for 2010, has recently been published, highlighting the issue of protected areas. Europe is the region with the greatest number of protected areas in the world, providing a wide range of services in a context of increasing pressures and a rapidly changing environment. The first message in the series considered the interaction between climate change and biodiversity.
