The Department for Transport has published a guide which covers a range of sustainable travel initiatives that authorities can consider bringing forward as part of Local Transport Plans (LTPs). This document supports the LTP guidance published in July 2009 by explaining sustainable travel and exploring how programmes could be implemented through LTPs. The aim of the guide is to:

• help make the business case for sustainable, low carbon initiatives and help bring it into the core of local authorities’ work; and
• draw on the latest developments to show how sustainable travel initiatives might best be delivered, measures and funded, drawing on examples of good practice from around the country.

This guide will be followed by further detailed evidence and information in the coming months to support the practical development of initiatives. The government has also announced a £10m funding boost to green transport initiatives across the England. Under the plans the government's Cycling Demonstration Towns, the Peak District National Park and sustainable transport charity Sustrans will receive extra money.
