Valuing the natural environmenthttp://www.naturalengland.org.uk/Images/nochargev2_tcm6-14259.pdf A new report from Natural England argues that a healthy natural environment provides cost-effective solutions to many of the challenges we face, from flooding and coastal defence, through to delivering fresh water and adapting to climate change. It adds that investing in a healthy natural environment is essential to tackle the challenges of climate change and food, water and energy security, with new ecological solutions required to deliver multiple services and benefits cost-effectively. The report suggests that this will require: a deeper understanding of the economic value of nature and natural capital and the use of an ecosystem services approach to better inform decision-making processes; enhanced public investments in the natural environment to deliver greater efficiency and improved outcomes; and new mechanisms and institutions that enable more ecosystem services to become part of the formal economy, thereby stimulating innovation, enterprise and investment in their provision.
