A symposium, convened by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), European Travel Commission (ETC) and VisitSweden in Gothenburg on 14-15 September 2009, aimed to: provide clear information on how the follow-up to the Kyoto Protocol will affect the tourism sector; show solutions to the problem imposed by climate change at the destination level and in the tourism supply chain; define the role required by different stakeholders, especially with regard to national tourism organizations; and assess how to integrate a climate change response strategy within the global new green deal. At the event, the UNWTO outlined its position on climate change and the development of a green global tourism economy, while the ETC unveiled its own state-of-the-art climate change and sustainable tourism knowledge networking strategy for NTOs.
